Rhynchophorus Ferrugineus aka Red Beetle
The palm trees of Athens are dying. Not all of them but a good number of them. The culprit is a rather nice looking insect going by the scientific name Rhynchophorus Ferrugineus or more commonly known as the Red Beetle. Prior to its metamorphosis the lavra infests the palm tree by borrowing deep into the trunk's centre where it feeds on the soft tissue it finds there. This feeding will in most cases destroy the plant's core eventually killing the plant. Hearing of the existence of the Red Beetle I sought out to find one every time I stumbled across an ill looking or dead palm tree. Last summer (2010) one crawled (or flew its way) to my balcony and while I had never seen such an insect before I let it go and didn't think much of it at the time. Later when I made the connection between insect and infestation I realised that what I saw was actually a Red Beetle. A year has passed and only a few days ago another one appeared on my balcony. This time with camera in hand I took some pictures. These insects are still alive and kicking. Which tree did this little one help to destroy? I wonder....
